Cottee caps off Merchant Navy's mammoth month

Cottee's brilliant win at Listed level has capped off an enormous month for Kooringal Stud stallion Merchant Navy.
The four-year-old notched her sixth victory from just 14 appearances in taking out the $160,000 Tatts Mile at Eagle Farm on Saturday (June 29).

The dual Group 1-winning Merchant Navy (pictured) produced 19 individual winners in June, with his tally including Subliminal (Caulfield victory making it three straight), Naval Commission (Warwick Farm among a hat-trick of wins), Navyonthehighway (consecutive successes at Sunshine Coast and Doomben), Merchant Boss (Morphettville) and Arquana (Sandown-Hillside) before Cottee's black type performance.

"Merchant Navy had a huge month and now boasts 65 winners of 100 races for the season," Kooringal's Angus Lamont said.

"He is equal third for winners on the third season sires list and second in the top 10 of percentage of winners-to-runners ... it's an extremely impressive statistic.

"A number of these horses are young progressive types who keep stepping up through their grades with wins from 1080m to 2200m in June.

"I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see them stepping up to stakes level."
